Introduction
Hey everyone! I am Neev Turakhia, a high school senior at the Emerald Heights International School, in Indore, India. I am a Crimson Access Opportunity student who is always excited and eager to explore the depths of the world integrated with Business, Economics and Technology. My passion for this field motivated me to apply to this renowned program.
Getting Started
It was 15 June 2024 – I had already been stressed out with my work when I opened that mail! A mail that converted all my stress into a sense of accomplishment. I had been accepted into the prestigious Perennial Partners Work Experience program at the Delta Institute on a full scholarship. I don’t think there would be any high school student in this world who wants to pursue fintech in the future and would not be excited to be working under one of the world’s leading investment banking companies. But I had the opportunity to live that dream. Now I knew that over the course of the next 4 weeks, I had to make the most out of it.
To get started, I was provided with a letter of acceptance and some instructions to align myself with the dynamics of the corporate world. I was so excited to meet my mentors, my colleagues and highly experienced industry representatives.
Program Info
Soon after, we had our first-ever orientation session with our mentor Ms. Anushka in which we were equipped with all the essential information that was required to make our work experience smoother. This included things such as knowing how to use the Slack platform, using Notion for better organization of work and Google Calendar for managing our time effectively. We were also introduced to Mr. Abhi Das, who would later become our professor for the module sessions throughout the program. Getting to know our team members is essential for a successful project and hence for the very same reason, we were divided into separate breakout rooms. This was a time when they wanted us to be familiar with all our colleagues. All of us were given a timeline and some deadlines for the tasks that would ultimately take us to the final case study pitch night.
High Points
For me, the high point of this whole once-in-a-lifetime experience was to get to work in such a renowned company at a global level under those experts in the field I want to pursue in the future. I was one of the only 2 Indians selected in this cohort. Therefore, meeting people from so many different countries, different backgrounds, different cultures and most importantly different perspectives was something very exciting for me since it teaches you so much. Not everyone in my team would have had the same working style and same ideologies as me but this work experience was all about this – the way the real corporate world works.
Challenges
The most challenging thing for me in this whole experience was my time zone. Since I am in India i.e. GMT +5.30, for every module session, check-in meeting or any other meeting with my mentors, I always had to do it at 5 am early in the morning. Moreover, the program had people from all different time zones around the world. So, in general, deciding on one common time to meet with our teammates was also a difficult task.
Key Learnings
The past 4 weeks have taught me a lot. From learning from the best in the world to waking up at really odd times to work, this journey has been nothing short of amazing. This program has made me learn the importance of effective time management. I’ve now learnt that no one in life is short of time until you manage your time well and set priorities. I had my school ongoing simultaneously during the program for which I started to complete my module sessions and meetings in the morning and then leave for my school immediately. This was the level of organization and routine that this program has embroidered in me. Furthermore, this program has also significantly helped in my communication skills, and leadership roles and also furthered my knowledge in Fintech.
Conclusion
All in all, these 4 weeks have been an extremely exciting and knowledgeable journey for me. I will never forget the time I've had with all my mentors, colleagues and executives. I feel that I've got the perfect start for my future learning about what and how these multi-billion dollar companies work. I would definitely recommend this program to students who are willing to push their limits and come out of their comfort zone to become future leaders.
