Van's story is one of determination, curiosity, and growth. As a rising high school senior, she set out to not only gain practical skills but to immerse himself in a global learning environment. Over the course of the program, Van collaborated with peers from 18 different countries, tackled complex challenges, and contributed to a real-world project that showcased her talent and dedication.

Working with Amazon Web Services as a High School Student
…is an opportunity I couldn’t even imagine before my Work Experience Program this summer!
My name is Van Phan, a rising high school senior in Vietnam, and I have just completed my Work Experience Program at Amazon Web Services (AWS WEP) this August. As a student with a burning passion for technology, participating in this program was not only a significant milestone in my educational journey but also a dream opportunity that allowed me to engage with cutting-edge advancements in the field.
Expectations vs. Reality
When applying for AWS WEP, I envisioned this program as a gateway to the dynamic world of Cloud Computing, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and a chance to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges. My initial expectations were high – I hoped to gain practical skills, build a strong professional network, and contribute meaningfully to our team’s innovative projects.
But AWS has exceeded my expectations from day one! I was immersed in a culture of innovation and collaboration with brilliant minds from. Engaging with brilliant minds from 18 different countries provided a unique opportunity to exchange diverse perspectives and ideas, enriching my understanding of technology and its applications. These sessions not only deepened my technical skills but also fostered critical thinking about the future of cloud computing. The insights gained from these experiences have equipped me with the tools necessary to navigate an ever-evolving technological landscape, reinforcing my belief that AWS is at the forefront of innovation.
The Power of Collaboration
One of the highlights was undoubtedly contributing to our capstone project. I had a chance to collaborate with a talented international team on a capstone project to develop a machine learning model for car crash involvement prediction, leveraging AWS tools like Sagemaker and S3. The diversity of perspectives brought a unique dynamism to our problem-solving approach.
We leveraged our combined knowledge of machine learning, data science, and different cultural insights to build a robust model. Working across time zones and cultural differences tested our communication and project management skills, ultimately strengthening our teamwork and interpersonal abilities.
Overcoming Challenges
Challenges were definitely part of the journey. Wrapping my head around machine learning algorithms was no walk in the park. There were times when I felt like I was drowning in a sea of equations and jargon. But I wouldn't have made it through without my amazing teammates’ patient support. And my mentor’s office hours were a lifesaver! He broke down complex concepts into more digestible chunks, and I slowly started to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
With the newfound knowledge, I was finally able to dive deeper into the capstone project. Armed with a better understanding of machine learning algorithms, I contributed significantly to developing our team’s model. It was incredibly rewarding to see how my initial struggles transformed into a valuable asset to the team.
Presenting the Capstone Project
A standout moment came when I presented our capstone project to a panel of AWS representatives. The experience was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating, as I stood before industry experts who held the potential to evaluate our hard work. To have our hard work recognized by industry experts was an immense honor. Their feedback was invaluable, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the real-world implications of our project, motivating me for future endeavors.
Reflecting on Growth and Learning
Reflecting on my AWS WEP journey, I recognize that the challenges I encountered were not merely obstacles but invaluable opportunities for personal and intellectual growth. Each hurdle compelled me to develop essential skills, such as effective time management and problem-solving. These competencies have become instrumental in navigating both my academic and professional pursuits. Moreover, the significance of seeking help when needed became evident during moments of uncertainty. Engaging with peers and mentors allowed me to gain diverse perspectives, enriching my understanding of complex issues. My mentors played a particularly crucial role; their guidance provided clarity and direction amid confusion. Their support not only helped me overcome immediate challenges but also instilled a sense of resilience that continues to benefit me.
From this wonderful opportunity, I’m equipped with a comprehensive understanding of machine learning. The program also emphasized the significance of effective communication, collaboration, and the ability to think critically and solve problems independently. The immense satisfaction of witnessing my contributions positively impacting the team's progress and potentially even future impact is a feeling I will always treasure. The AWS WEP has been a transformative experience that has shaped my career aspirations. The exposure to real-world projects and the mentorship I received have been invaluable. I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and confident in my ability to contribute meaningfully to the tech industry with a strong foundation, thanks to AWS.
